Our research focuses on:
- The role of affect and basic emotional processes such as emotinal experience and expression, emotion regulation, repression, and emotional awareness in psychological disorders such as anxiety disorders, depression, and physical illness such as chronic pain. Currently, we are examining the role of emotional suppression versus expression in intimate relationships, the effects of emotional dysregulation, ambivalence, and clarity in stress regulation in adolescents, adults, and individuals reporting childhood trauma, in addition to the role of attentional bias in emotion laborers and individuals with social anxiety.
- Exploring and understanding the ways in which culture may influence emotional processes. This entails examination of individuals from different cultures and to this end, we are looking into perceptions of emotional suppression versus expression in culturally mismatched dyads. As emotional expression may be socialized in families, part of our research focuses on socialization of emotional experience, in particular parental attitude towards both negative and positive emotional expressiveness in children.
